Smart Cities, Equal Futures: Integrating Gender Perspectives into Sustainable Urban Innovation

Abstract

The global shift to smart cities is aimed at increasing resource, governmental transparency and environmental sustainability using advanced digital technologies. However, gender aspect of this change is not adequately tackled leading to disparate provision of access, reduced safety policies as well as lack of women representation of technology in making crucial decisions. The paper explores the potential of urban design to be gender-inclusive as the source of sustainable innovation and social equity in the smart-city ecosystems. The study uses a mixed-method research design, synthesizing policy analysis, comparative case studies, and survey-based data of ten Asian, African, and European smart-city programs on the role of gender integration in citizen engagement, perception of safety, and access to services, and its effect. Quantitative outcomes indicate that urban areas that implement gender indicators based on planning and governing systems have 25 percent greater citizen satisfaction with them, 19 percent more accessibility, and 22 percent better urban safety perception than gender-neutral projects. The findings relating to qualitative approaches will promote the transformative power of feminist urbanism through the lens of empathy, inclusivity, and participatory governance are the main facilitators of equitable urban change. The article concludes that integrating gender attitudes into the design of the digital infrastructure and policy increases the levels of technological adoption, trust in technology, and sustainability. This study has shown that the smart-city innovation can be reframed to include an equity-driven approach, thus, resilient, adaptive, and even viable urban futures rely on gender-based approaches.
