Ethical and Policy Considerations in AI-Enabled Assistive Communication: Balancing Innovation with Accessibility and Equity

Since artificial intelligence (AI) transforms assistive communication technology, ethical and policy standards need to change to bring responsible innovation. In this paper, the author discusses the ethical, legal, and social consequences of AAC systems that could be controlled by AI, smart wearables, and BCI-based communication platforms. Such aspects as privacy of the data, bias in the algorithms, accessibility, affordability, and autonomy of the user are key issues. We examine current regulatory systems in the spheres of health, disability and online access to determine our loopholes that prevent fair usage of assistive communication technologies. The multidisciplinary stakeholder initiative of patients, clinicians, engineers, and policymakers is suggested so that to develop the guidelines that balance the technological development with inclusivity and equity. The case studies are provided where ethical supervision is essential, like AI-assisted decision-making in therapeutic applications or information exchange in rehabilitation hubs used in clouds. This paper suggests policies focusing on universal design, transparent algorithms and equal distribution of resources. Our results make it clear that in ethically and accessibly-oriented AI in assistive-communicational contexts, there should be proactive policy intervention, collaboration across the sectors, and constant monitoring of the societal impacts in order to reach the desired state. The contribution gives us a roadmap on how to build the regulatory and ethical schemes that foster innovations as well as protecting the rights and dignity of the person with communication difficulties.
