Abstract

Nutrition-sensitive agriculture has become a viable approach to household food insecurity reduction and enhancement in dietary diversity by using sustainable agricultural interventions. The growing reliance on staple crops, poor availability of nutritious foods, and poor nutrition knowledge has played a significant role in malnutrition and poor nutritional behaviors among rural families. Although agricultural productivity has been enhanced, inadequate dietary diversification and nutritional imbalance continue to plague most communities, signaling the need to implement integrated agriculture-based nutrition strategies. Thus, the purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of agricultural methods that are responsive to nutrition in enhancing food security and dietary diversity of rural farming communities. The research used a survey-based field research design that was done on selected households that engage in diversified agricultural practices. Structured questionnaires, household food consumption surveys, dietary diversity assessments and field observations were used to gather data. Sensitive agricultural interventions that are sensitive to nutrition were studied such as kitchen gardening, crop diversification, integrated livestock farming and nurturing of nutrient-rich crops. The nutritional outcomes were measured using Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) and food security indicators, and statistical tests such as descriptive statistics analysis and correlation analysis were conducted to determine relationships between agricultural activities and household nutrition status. The results showed that families that followed nutrition-sensitive agricultural methods showed better availability of food, better dietary diversity and consumption of fruits, vegetables and protein-rich foods. The paper concludes that nutrition sensitive agriculture is a major contributor to sustainable household food security and nutritional enhancement in the process of aiding livelihood development and continuity of a community.
