Abstract

Forest degradation is a key environmental issue around the world, and it has many negative impacts, including biodiversity loss, ecosystem instability, soil degradation and climate vulnerability. Forest landscapes are facing threats from rapid deforestation, unsustainable land-use, habitats fragmentation and anthropogenic disturbance, which has reduced the ecological functionality of forest landscapes and limited their potential to deliver essential forest ecosystem services and to regulate climate. Ecological restoration has become a viable solution to rehabilitate degraded forest ecosystems, whilst simultaneously enhancing long-term environmental resilience and enhancing biodiversity conservation. This paper assesses ecological restoration options for degraded forest landscapes and their effectiveness at improving climate resilient and biodiversity conservation outcomes. The methodology includes ecological assessment, biodiversity assessment, the evaluation of soil quality through laboratory analysis and remote sensing environmental monitoring. Parameters like vegetation recovery, species richness, soil organic carbon, biomass increase and ecosystem stability are used to evaluate restoration performance. The results show that ecological restoration is able to greatly improve the recovery of biodiversity, soil stability, carbon sequestration potential, and vegetation cover. The study recommends the need to develop integrated restoration frameworks with sustainable policies and long-term ecological monitoring, which could significantly enhance ecosystem recovery and environmental sustainability.
