Abstract

The seismic performance of a G+10 Mivan wall building has been compared with that of a conventional reinforced cement concrete framed building, both in STAAD.Pro. The two structures are designed to have identical plan dimensions, storey heights, material grades, loading conditions, seismic zone and soil properties. The methods used were finite element modelling, equivalent static analysis, modal analysis and response spectrum analysis. The following performance measures were used: Maximum storey displacement, Storey drift, Base shear, Fundamental time period, and Storey stiffness. The displacement of the Mivan wall building was observed to be a maximum of 32.6 mm and that of the RCC frame was 48.8 mm, a reduction of 33.2%. There was a 37.2% reduction in maximum drift and a 51.7% increase in storey stiffness. The base shear of the Mivan model was also increased by 18.4%, but with a shorter fundamental period of 0.91 s. The results show that Mivan wall construction is superior in terms of lateral stiffness and deformation control in the analysed seismic conditions.
